Columbia Mourns the Passing of a Beloved Matriarch, Joanne L. Murphy
Columbia, PA — The Columbia community is celebrating the remarkable life of Joanne L. Murphy, affectionately known as “The Nan,” who passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, at the age of 85. Joanne was more than a lifelong resident—she was a cornerstone of family, faith, and entrepreneurship, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations.
Born and raised in Columbia, Joanne overcame early adversity after losing her mother to polio as an infant. That experience shaped her into a woman of resilience and compassion. A proud graduate of Columbia High School’s Class of 1958, Joanne soon married her beloved husband, Gardiner T. Murphy Sr., and together they built not only a family but a thriving business empire that became part of the town’s fabric.
From Murphy’s Paint Store to Columbia Factory Outlet, Columbia Tire Outlet & Garage, GT Auto Parts, and more, Joanne and Gardiner’s entrepreneurial spirit created opportunities and strengthened the local economy. Their ventures were more than businesses—they were gathering places where values of hard work and integrity were passed down to their children and employees alike.
But Joanne’s greatest achievement was her family. Known as the heart and glue that held everyone together, she created traditions that will live on forever—most notably her Sunday dinners, which she hosted for over two decades. Her warmth and kindness lit up every room, and her love for Christmas made the holiday magical for all who knew her.
A woman of deep faith, Joanne was a devoted parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Her faith guided her through life’s joys and sorrows, and her generosity extended beyond her family to her community. She supported local schools, including Our Lady of the Angels, and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Joanne is survived by her six children, 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild—a testament to the enduring family she nurtured. She will be laid to rest beside her husband following a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Friday, January 9, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Our Lady of the Angels School, continuing Joanne’s legacy of faith and education.
As Columbia bids farewell to one of its brightest lights, Joanne’s story reminds us that true success is measured not in wealth or accolades, but in love, faith, and the lives we touch.

My condolences to the Murphy family
