BREAKING NEWS: Columbia Borough Shooting Leads to Arrest and Multiple Charges

Columbia, PA — January 8, 2026
A violent altercation in Columbia Borough escalated into a shooting late Wednesday night, leaving one man critically injured and another facing a slew of serious charges.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Columbia Police, officers were dispatched to the first block of South Sixth Street at approximately 10:44 PM on January 7, 2026, following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his arm, bleeding profusely. The victim was also stabbed in the abdomen. The victim was rushed to Lancaster General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police identified the alleged shooter as Matthew Rowley, who was reportedly involved in a heated physical altercation with the victim prior to the shooting. Investigators say the dispute stemmed from a disagreement involving a woman. During the confrontation, Rowley allegedly brandished and discharged a firearm illegally, striking the victim in his left arm/chest area.

Further investigation revealed that Rowley was prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior convictions, including Burglary under Pennsylvania law. Authorities noted that Rowley had never obtained a valid Pennsylvania license to carry a firearm. In addition to the shooting, Rowley allegedly accessed a folding knife and stabbed the victim in the abdomen during the struggle.

Police recovered the firearm at the scene and documented evidence supporting the charges. Rowley now faces multiple felony counts, including:

  • Attempted Criminal Homicide
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Persons Not to Possess Firearms
  • Firearms Not to Be Carried Without a License

The incident has shaken the Columbia Borough community, as residents grapple with the violent nature of the crime. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may follow.
