Remembering James Stover: Columbia’s Cornerstone of News and Wit

Columbia Borough lost one of its most recognizable and cherished figures today with the passing of James Stover, age 81, longtime owner of Stover’s News Agency on Locust Street. For decades, Jim was more than just the man behind the counter—he was a fixture of Columbia life, a storyteller, a jokester, and a quiet force of consistency in a town that’s seen its share of change.

Born and raised in Columbia, Jim inherited the newsstand from his father and ran it with a blend of old-school charm and dry wit that made every visit memorable. Whether you were grabbing a paper, a lottery ticket, or just stopping in to chat, Jim had a way of making you feel like you were part of something bigger—a community, not just a transaction.

A Life of Service and Stories

Stover’s News Agency wasn’t just a business—it was a hub. Jim knew everyone’s name, their favorite newspaper, and probably their dog’s name too. He had a knack for remembering birthdays, local gossip, and the occasional off-color joke that somehow always landed just right. His humor was legendary: when asked why he never raised prices on candy bars, he’d say, “I’m not in it for the money—I’m in it for the cavities.”

Jim’s dedication extended beyond the storefront. He supported local fundraisers, sponsored youth sports teams, and was known to quietly help neighbors in need. He never sought recognition, but his impact was felt in every corner of Columbia.

A Columbia Original

In a town often wrestling with its identity and future, Jim was a reminder of its heart. He weathered economic shifts, downtown revitalization efforts, and the rise of digital media—all while keeping the newsstand open seven days a week. His presence was a comfort, a constant, and a reminder that some things are worth preserving.

Jim is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a town full of people who considered him family. His passing leaves a void that can’t be filled—but his legacy will live on in every person who ever walked through the door of Stover’s News Agency and left with more than just a newspaper.

Final Edition

As Columbia mourns the loss of one of its own, we remember James Stover not just for what he sold, but for what he gave: laughter, loyalty, and love for his town. He was the kind of man who made Columbia feel like home.

Rest easy, Jim. You were the headline every day, whether you knew it or not.

    1. My condolences to the entire family . This seems a little sudden. And with Rick being their the legacy will continue. This has been one of my favorite family owned stores. Since I’ll say I was 16. May he rest in peace.
