Flash Floods Ravage Columbia, PA: Roads Closed, Residents Urged to Stay Indoors

Columbia, PA — July 15, 2025 — Torrential rains swept through Columbia and surrounding areas in Lancaster County on Monday, triggering flash floods that shut down major roadways, stranded vehicles, and prompted urgent warnings from local authorities.

According to the Columbia Borough Police Department, multiple streets in the borough were closed due to rising waters, including intersections near Front Street (Route 441), Mill Street, and Lancaster Avenue. Police issued a stark warning to residents: “Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.”

Road Closures and Hazards

  • Route 30 was closed in both directions between the Mountville Exit and Columbia/Marietta Exit due to flooding2.
  • Route 283 East was shut down between Rheems/Elizabethtown and Mount Joy exits.
  • A tree blocked Chickies Hill Road near Columbia, with visible flooding along the roadside3.

Social media posts from Columbia residents showed submerged vehicles and fast-moving water across residential streets. One video captured Shawnee Run overflowing its banks, turning the normally calm stream into a torrent.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for Lancaster County, citing rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches with more expected. “This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation,” the alert read.

Emergency crews responded to multiple water rescues throughout western Lancaster County, including Mount Joy and Elizabethtown. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as of Tuesday morning7.

PennDOT crews are working to clear debris and assess damage. Officials say some closures may remain in place throughout the day.

As cleanup begins, residents are reminded to avoid flooded areas and heed all warnings. “Turn around, don’t drown,” urged the National Weather Service.
