Last night, the heart of Columbia sparkled as families gathered for the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, a tradition lovingly planned and carried forward by Don Murphy and his wife, Becky. For more than a decade, the Murphys—together with the Merchant’s Association of Columbia (MAC), volunteers, and countless community members—have turned this event into a celebration of joy, music, and togetherness.
A Night of Festive Cheer
On November 29, Locust Street Park came alive with holiday magic. Carolers filled the crisp night air with timeless Christmas melodies, and children listened in awe as Mrs. Claus read ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. The anticipation built as the crowd counted down—then, with a burst of light, Columbia’s Christmas tree illuminated the night sky, officially welcoming the holiday season.
The Magic Behind the Tradition
While Don Murphy has often been credited as the visionary behind Columbia’s holiday traditions, he is quick to remind everyone that the magic of the day is a group effort. “My wife Becky deserves equal credit with me,” Murphy shared. “The event, from the tree lighting to photos with Santa, is made possible by MAC, our volunteers, and all our members who participate in this tradition. I’m one person, but many others put this together—I certainly couldn’t do it without them.”
That spirit of collaboration shines through in every detail. The program itself was a labor of love, assembled by Murphy’s daughter Lauren, Art Printing, Bethany Hartzok, and others who contributed their time and creativity.
Sponsors Who Make It Possible
This celebration wouldn’t be possible without the support of local businesses and organizations. Special thanks to:
- Hinkle’s Restaurant – Hosting Santa photos and spreading holiday cheer.
- Burning Bridge Antiques and Murphy’s Mercantile – Bringing charm and character to downtown Columbia.
- Columbia Market House – Home to cookie decorating and family fun.
- Merchant’s Association of Columbia – Coordinating Small Business Saturday and festive giveaways.
Their partnership ensures that Columbia’s holiday traditions remain vibrant and accessible to all.
From Holiday Spirit to Economic Growth
Murphy’s vision extends beyond Christmas lights. His ambitious Hilton Hampton Inn project at the historic Becker Potato Chip Factory site is set to redefine Columbia’s future. This $22 million development will feature 80 guest rooms, a rooftop lounge overlooking the Susquehanna River, and a full-service restaurant, bringing tourism and jobs to the borough while preserving its rich history.
A Legacy of Light and Love
As the twinkling lights danced on the tree tonight, they reflected more than holiday spirit—they symbolized Columbia’s enduring commitment to community. From festive gatherings to transformative projects, Don and Becky Murphy, MAC, and their dedicated volunteers continue to shape a town where traditions shine brighter each year.
On a personal note, thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, MAC, and all the sponsors, businesses, and volunteers who make this tradition possible. Your shared vision and dedication are truly inspiring.
